Billabong and Andy Warhol Join Forces

Billabong LAB, Billabong's new division exclusively dedicated to artistic collaboration, joined forces with The Andy Warhol Foundation, a non-profit organization in order to design this colorful, surf-themed collection of ready-to-wear, swimwear and accessories for both men and women. The Warhol Foundation is well-known in the world of modern art for the financial support it provides for the creation of visual arts. Billabong and The Warhol Foundation share a common goal, to inspire and develop the freedom of artistic expression. Warhol famously said, "I came out of the womb on a surfboard." Warhol Surf sheds light on the artist's little known love of surf culture, which is, of course, rooted in a desire to defy society's conventions. This is a driving force that unfolds time and time again throughout, not only, his work but, also, in Billabong's alternative products. This collaboration comes naturally to Billabong who have successfully launched similar projects with inspiring and influential artists such as Bob Marley and Metallica.

"The rebel spirit of Warhol and his attraction for non-conformism lead him to South California in 1968, where he passed two weeks filming local surfers for an underground film, 'San Diego Surf.' The foundation is happy to work with Billabong in order to pay hommage to these characterstic individuals who refused to give in to all types of convention," declared Michael Dayton Hermann, the Director of Licensing at The Andy Warhol Foundation. "Andy's passion for progressive art and his love for surf culture have become a powerful connection for our brand and they have been a wonderful source of inspiration in the creation of this collection" added Shannon North, Global President of Billabong. "Seeing Warhol's iconic creations come to life on our silhouettes was a historic moment for our brand."
