Filling the niche market
With studies saying that 0.6% of US adults identify as transgender, which roughly translates into 1.4 million people, the fashion industry is still far behind in fulfilling their needs. The first transgender models go back to 1960 when April Ashley reached fame on magazine covers and catwalks and 1971 when Tracey “Africa” Norman was chosen in 1971 by Irvin Penn for Vogue Italia. Both their careers were cut short when they were outed by the press. A lot has changed since then, and the recent push for inclusivity in fashion campaigns proves it, yet a lot still needs to be done. Trans-inclusive apparel is considered too “niche” for larger, established companies. However there are a small but growing number of designers producing collections that specifically showcase transgender models.
Ms A London comes to the US
It was in 2019 that stylist Bok Goodall and actress/model Winn Austin in the UK teamed up to launch a lingerie brand designed to cater to for Transgender women and Gender Non-Binary individuals. Their launch collection focuses on a tight collection of solutions pieces that are tailored to fit the Transgender woman’s body type and includes an unwired bra, high waist briefs, a slip dress, and two bodysuits. The initial color palette features core colors of black, white, skin tones and, of course, leopard print. Besides their domestic market, the the young brand caught the attention of Journelle, the first retailer to introduce them onto the American market.
Creating a size chart
Furthermore, when developing their lingerie brand, Ms A London founders discovered that there was nothing available in terms of standardized sizing and that everything had to be built from scratch. This prompted Bok and Win, together with event organizer Marcia Griffiths, to set up a charitable organization, My Size CIC, to develop a global sizing standard that can be used across the industry worldwide. Research will initially focus on lingerie and swimwear and will be rolled out to all ready to wear. The team will be carrying out fit sessions in the future with Transgender women and all that identify as female (cross dressing men, drag queens very welcome!) as they want their range to be as considered and inclusive as possible.
