Getting intimate with Samantha Chang

Can you tell us what life was like before becoming a designer?

I worked in sales before becoming a designer. After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design, I worked in Sales at Issey Miyake in New York and Paris. This experience not only deepened my understanding of the industry but also equipped me with a comprehensive perspective on merging creativity with strategic business practices in fashion.

Lingerie, sleepwear, loungewear… why this choice?
I was intrigued by the intricacy of laces and ultra-feminine details one finds in lingerie. During one of my shopping trips to a prestigious department store in NYC, I decided lingerie could be more trend-driven and fun! I was inspired to push the envelope.

What inspires you?
I draw inspiration from architecture, design, colors, and unique experiences. These elements fuel my creativity and influence my approach to creating a harmonized collection each season.

What is the best part of your job?
I truly enjoy witnessing the harmonious blend of prints and laces each season.

The most challenging?
The most challenging aspect of my job is consistently keeping my customers excited season after season, navigating the delicate balance between novelty and familiarity.

Why the decision to launch a concept trade show?
I aim to elevate the visibility and appeal of independent brands, offering a curated space where innovation meets sophistication.

Silk and Lake Como, what do they mean to you?
Silk and Lake Como evoke a blend of timeless elegance and natural beauty. Like the smoothness of silk, Lake Como's serene waters and picturesque landscapes embody a sense of tranquility and sophistication. Together, they symbolize a harmonious union of luxury and nature, where the softness of silk meets the allure of one of Italy's most enchanting destinations.

Your typical day.
Eat healthy and delicious meals, work hard, exercise and keep myself informed of world affairs.

Do you have any particular hobbies or passions?
Ten years ago, I embarked on a thrilling journey as an aerialist. It is a unique and invigorating way to cultivate strength and maintain a youthful mind. Aerial silk, hammock, and trapeze have become my favorite apparatuses, each offering its own blend of artistry, athleticism, and sheer excitement.

What did you dream of becoming as a little girl?
As a little girl I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. I knew when I was 6 years old that one day I would be able to turn my drawings into real dresses.

Your proudest moment?  
I don't think I have one. Maybe one day there will be a super proud moment. At this moment, I am proud to be the featured designer of this interview.

Dreams yet to be fulfilled?
Celebrate one new year in 3 continents.Sadly, you lost your business partner Victor Lee earlier this year. What did you learn from him?Accessing risk and managing a small business efficiently was the core of our partnership. As a person, he was generous and caring. I learn to listen to people around me, work with people that I trust and always stay positive, be humble and be fair.

Work hard, Play hard.

The best way to relax?
Traveling to a new country and being alone is very relaxing for me.The world needs more…The world needs more caring… generosity and care for others is a call to cultivate a more compassionate and equitable world where everyone can flourish and contribute to a brighter future.
