The Best ofIntima & Swim Edit
Up until March 2017, Stuart Neuman was the VP/ Divisional Merchandise
Manager of the Cosmetics, Fragrances, and Tech. departments at the
Century 21 department store chain. From last spring his title and
responsibilities have evolved to embrace Intimate Apparel (including
Legwear and Sleepwear), and Cold Weather/Accessories.
Stuart, you’re a relatively fresh face in the world of intimates, can you introduce yourself and your background to us a little?
My name is Stuart Neuman and I am the VP/Divisional Merchandise Manager of several unique areas within Century 21 Department Stores, based in NYC. I am responsible for Cosmetics, Fragrances, Tech, Intimate Apparel (including Legwear and Sleepwear), and Cold Weather/Accessories. I have been at C21 for 15 terrific years! My background is in the Cosmetics and Fragrance industry, starting in 1987 at Saks Fifth Ave in their Executive Training program. I worked at Saks from 1987 to 1993, starting as an Assistant Buyer in Cosmetics, than as a Department Manager in a branch store, and than as a member of the initial Saks Planning division. From 1993 to 2002, I worked at Lord&Taylor as a Buyer for Beauty, and my last job there involved leading the Fragrance division. I have been at C21 since 2002, heading up the Cosmetics and Fragrance areas. Four years ago we launched a Tech Dept with all of the leading players in the Consumer Electronics industry. In March of 2017, I added Intimate Apparel and Accessories.
What will you bring from your background in fragrances and cosmetics to the world of intimates to give you an advantage?
Great
question. Cosmetics and Fragrances is a fast-paced, ever-evolving
industry. Innovation and newness drive this industry, and the
competition is fierce. And you cannot ignore the basic replenishment
customer. Sound familiar? So to me, it was a seamless transition to IA.
One thing that I did “borrow” from Cosm/Fragrances was the idea of a
strong holiday giftable presentation. Also, within the Cosm/Fragrance
industry, I learned that “it’s all about the people” – meaning that I
have an amazing team, and our internal and external partners are truly
special – they drive the business more than anything else!
